Antibody Testing


What is an antibody test?

An antibody test detects the presence of immunoglobulins, specialised cells of the immune system that are produced when the body is infected by a pathogenic organism like a virus or bacteria. The COVID-19 antibody test provided by 20/30 Labs detects anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG; these antibodies are generated after exposure to the virus.

What is the benefit of an antibody test?

An antibody test can be used as a way to check if you have previously been infected with COVID-19. It can also be used as complementary test to confirm a positive COVID-19 test result. Rarely, someone will not produce antibodies even if they have had a previous infection, but for most people an antibody test can provide much needed reassurance.    Testing is performed by analysing an intravenous blood sample collected by a 20/30 Phlebotomist. IDK® anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG is an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for qualitative measurement of IgG antibodies against the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 in human serum or EDTA plasma.

Both performance indicators fall within the requirements of Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) criteria for Antibody Testing.

Novel Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) by RT-qPCR

Testing is performed using a nasopharyngeal swab system which inactivates viral particles at point of sampling and preserves nucleic acids for downstream analysis.  We use the Genesig® Real-Time PCR Coronavirus Covid-19 (CE IVD) designed to achieve qualitative detection of SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA extracted from nasopharyngeal swabs, oropharyngeal swabs, and sputum samples. Viral RNA extracted from the sample matrix is purified, amplified, and characterised as Covid-19 specific.  The kit is validated to detect 0.58 copies/µl of SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA with a confidence ≥95%. False negative results may be caused by samples outside of viraemic phase. Results and clinical symptoms must be interpreted by a healthcare professional.

Swabs can be returned to us by courier or dropped off at the laboratories in Northamptonshire for analysis.

Our Novel Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) by RT-qPCR test is approved by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC).
