This study day will provide attendees with an understanding of basic microbiology, including different types of microorganism, how they are identified and categorized within the laboratory and their clinical significance in the healthcare environment. You will learn about environmental sampling in a healthcare setting, sample processing including laboratory testing and the importance of aseptic technique during sample collection. The day concludes with a tour of an operational microbiology laboratory where you will see environmental testing in action and practical demonstrations of the laboratory methods you learned about earlier in the day.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major cause of healthcare-acquired infection (HAI) that is becoming increasingly dangerous due to its ever-evolving antibiotic resistance. In this course, you will learn all about P. aeruginosa and the disease it causes, how infection spreads and how it can be prevented, how water is tested for the presence of the bacterium and the laboratory methods used for culture and identification.
